EVENING SPORTS
MEETING AT MATAURA. The first meeting of the season was held by the Mataura Evening Sports Club at the Recreation Grounds on Monday evening, a large number of competitors being present, including several cyclists and runners from Gore and Wyndham. The local Pipe Band enlivened proceedings between races. The cycling events attracted the best fields and the handicappers provided some thrilling finishes. Although no official times were kept the races, in spite of the roughness of the tracks at present, were fast, and judging by the keenness of the competitors good racing should be general during the coming season. Although only two running events were held, the fields were good, several members of the Gore Club being present. During the evening several children’s races were run. Following were the results:— One Mile Cycling.—Redmond 1, Shave 2, Coster 3. 100 Yards.—First heat: McCaughn 1, E. Gordon 2. Second heat: G. Hoffman 1. P. Stewart 2.
