FATAL ACCIDENT
SEQUEL IN COURT. TAXI DRIVER STANDS TRIAL. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, November 1. The trial commenced in the Supreme Court to-day of Paul Olsen Sabo, a Norwegian, aged 41, a taxi driver. He was indicted that while in a state of intoxication he was in charge of a motor car and by act or omission in relation thereto did cause the death of William Edwards. Prisoner pleaded not guilty. The evidence of the Crown showed that accused drove in an erratic manner from Hunter street along Customhouse Quay and Whitmore street at a speed of 25 miles. Entering Whitmore street he ran down deceased who was crossing the road and died in the hospital the same night without recovering consciousness. Police officers and medical witnesses said accused was suffering from the effects of liquor. A constable _ who examined and tested the car said the footbrake would not act and the handbrake acted mostly on one wheel. After accused’s car hit Edwards it . slowed down and then went off again and was followed by a man in another car.
