£l00 FOR A DRINK

GOLFER’S QUEER HANDICAP. Mr John de Forest, holder of the British amateur golf championship, lately signed a strange contract. He undertook that, for the two months which he was to spend in America as a member of the Walker Cup team, he would pay £lOO to charity for every alcoholic drink he took. Mr de Forest could afford a few lapses. He is the son of the wealthy Baron de Forest. He sailed for the United States on August 6 with a trifle more than four days’ respite. The contract allowed him to drink beer while, he was on the boat. Once he landed in America Mr de Forest’s drinks would begin to cost him from 800 to 4000 times the normal price!
