RIVERTON REGATTA

ANNUAL MEETING OF CLUB. (From Our Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Riverton Regatta Club was held in the Town Hall, Riverton, on Thursday evening. Mr E. J. Stevens presided. The balance-sheet as submitted by Mr W. McKay, hon. treasurer, showed that the credit balance, including assets, totalled £l3O 9/-. He stated that £2 was still outstanding in the .way of subscriptions, which was considered good, and that the regatta, although not resulting in a profit, had paid its way. In moving the adoption of the bal-ance-sheet the chairman said it was regrettable that no report had accompanied the annual financial statement, and he trusted the secretary would attend to this in the future. Last year, he said, the committee had kept up the prize money, and in some quarters this had been looked upon, as a somewhat risky undertaking when the existing depression was taken into consideration. However, they had not come out on the wrong side of the ledger, and the “nest egg” in the bank placed there in case of emergency, still remained intact. The revenue was back in one or two instances, viz., railway rebate, sale of programmes, and collections from visiting motorists, due, of course, to the hard times being experienced everywhere. As regards the rowing, it was generally admitted by the public that an excellent day’s sport had been provided, and it was very gratifying to residents to see the home crews coming home the winners in many of the events, and it was hoped that this year they would continue their success at the approaching regattas of the province. He said the incoming committee would have a few suggestions to consider, and these included dealing with the starting, and distinguishing caps being worn by coxwains of the A and B crews. He complimented the officials on their work for the year, and said his duties had been considerably lightened by the energy shown by the committee and the secretary who, although new to the office, had proved an energetic and painstaking official. He (the speaker) had now occupied the chair for a number of years, and he thought they should appoint a younger man to fill the position. He concluded by thanking the Press and all who had assisted them during the year. • The motion was seconded by Mr G. R. Bemdtson and carried. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: President, Mr E. J. Stevens; vice-presidents, Dr. N. G. Trotter, Messrs A. E. Willett, J. A. Martin, A. D. Angus, H. O. Spear, B. Richards and R. J. Walker; committee, Messrs John Joyce, G. Dickson, J. Frew, N. Beer, H. Helm, D. C. Robertson, D. Matheson, W. Fleck, G. R. Berndtson; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. McKay; auditor, Mr H. O. Spear. Mr McKay reported that, at a special meeting of the executive it had been decided to inaugurate an ail union, the funds going to the club. Permission had been granted by the Minister of Internal Affairs; the books had been printed and these had been sent out to different centres. As the closing day of the art union was in January, he thought it would be advisable to appoint sellers to dispose of tickets on regatta day.—Agreed to. Mr D. C. Robertson, in moving that

Mr R. Dickson be accorded a hearty vote of thanks for the use of his boat on regatta day, said Mr Dickson had been very good to the club, and he thought he should be recompensed in some way. It was resolved that Mr Dickson be thanked for his services and that he be also voted £1 1/-.
