GIRL GUIDES

LOCAL ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Invercargill Girl Guides’ Association was held in the Girl Guide rooms last evening, when Mrs R. S. Mclnnes (District Commissioner) presided. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet (already published) Mrs Mclnnes said that the total membership was slightly lower than last year. More leaders were required, and it was hoped in this way to increase the number of Guides. During the year Mrs J. S. Nelson (District Commissioner) had resigned on account of ill-health. Her suggestion that two District Commissioners should be appointed had been adopted. Mrs Nelson was one of the first two commissioners appointed in Southland, and her experience had been of great value. Miss Cumming, their most experienced Guider, had been appointed District Commissioner in her place. The report and balance-sheet were adopted without discussion, and the following office-bearers elected: President, Mrs Brookesmith; vice-presidents, Mesdames G. Chewings, A. Cutt, H. Stuckey, C. F. Hackworth and Miss Asher; local executive, representatives appointed by each company, and Mesdames D. Wilson, R. Pollok and Bell; provincial executive, Mesdames H. Stuckey, Nelson, R. O. Boyens, H. Brumby, M. H. Mitchel and Bell; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mrs M. H. Mitchel, library committee, Mesdames R. O. Boyens, J. S. Nelson and W. Hinchey. hon. auditor. Miss Hackworth. The question of the election of a president raised some discussion. Mrs Mclnnes explained that the position was purely an honorary one, and really amounted to asking someone for the use of her name. The Rules, Policy,

and Regulations stated that the Commissioner should take the chair at meetings. It was decided that a president should be elected as in previous years. It was decided that a letter of appreciation should be sent to Miss Warneke, Matron of the Karitane-Hunt Hospital, thanking her for the help she had extended to the Guide movement. It was also decided that the sewing remaining from the competitions should be given to the Karitane-Hunt Hospital, any not suitable for use there to be given to the Victoria Home. At the conclusion of the meeting, addresses were given by Mrs J. G. Macdonald (Provincial Commissioner) and Mrs H. S. Cordery (Camp Adviser),
