Play generally was slow but was relieved by smart fielding, especially by Bradman, who returned marvellously, and also the artistic strokes of Pataudi. Sutcliffe was solid and showed attractive strokes all round the wicket. He got his 169 in 235 minutes. His score included one six and sixteen fours. Pataudi was extremely strong on leg strokes. He gave another fine display, using his wrists in most strokes with unapparent effort. His century was got in 180 minutes and included eleven fours. Hammond gave his usual display of forceful defence, at times going halfway down the pitch to meet slow balls. His footwork was beautiful to watch. Ames did not have sufficient time to show his qualities. McCabe was the best bowler, the batsmen treating him with great respect.
