TECHNICAL COLLEGE

BOARD OF MANAGERS. MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Southland Technical College Board of Managers was held last evening, the chairman (Mr J. H. Reed) presiding over the following members: Miss C. McLeod, Messrs W. McChesney, W. G. Tait, W. Carswell, A. J. Service, A. J. Ball, W. M. C. Denham and D. Galbraith. . The principal (Mr C. A. Stewart) submitted the following report for October: “Since the end of last term some 41 boys and 21 girls have been withdrawn from the day school. While nearly one-half of these have transferred to evening classes the majority of the remainder are prevented by distance from such attendance. There is a measure of satisfaction in knowing that most of those who have left have found employment of some kind and so are able to help the family finances. The roll numbers in evening classes have been well maintained although attendance has been rather irregular during the last few weeks. I am pleased to be able to report from information received unofficially that the school hall will not be. used this year for external examinations conducted by the Education Department. Our candidates for the intermediate examination will be examined in our own class room and under our own supervisors. The conditions under which the examination is to be conducted are gradually becoming clearer and even, in some respects, a little more satisfactory; but the granting of certain exemptions seems to make the department’s attitude more illogical. At last month’s meeting some consideration was given to the using of pictures as an aid to teaching and in the development of the aesthetic . sense. Having discussed the matter with Mr Jenkin I would recommend that the board make a small grant for the purchase of selected historical frescoes and posters such as are issued by the British railway companies, the New Zealand Government Publicity Department, etc.” The report was adopted, the board making a grant of £5 for the purchase of pictures. Messrs Hoyles and Denham were appointed a visiting committee for the month.
