DOLE PAYMENT

UNEMPLOYED’S DEMAND FIGHT AGAINST QUESTIONNAIRE MASS DEMONSTRATIONS (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Sydney, October 26. Despite the unemployed ultimatum that unless the dole questionnaire is withdrawn the men would “take the dole” the State Government announced that it insists upon the use of the questionnaire. A big unemployed meeting at Cessnock last night urged the miners to strike, but the miners’ leaders, while in sympathy with the fight against the questionnaire pleaded with the men to keep the miners working. One hundred and fifty-eight police have been drafted to Cessnock. Mass demonstrations by the coalminers against the dole questionnaire were held to-day at Cessnock. A procession of nearly a thousand, headed by women carrying banners, marched through Cessnock to Kuri Kuri and halted at the courthouse, where they voiced their protests and gave the Government four hours in which to withdraw the questionnaire. Failing satisfaction they threatened to help themselves to food and provisions. A large batch of police was sent from Sydney and Newcastle to preserve law and order.

MINES IDLE CESSNOCK DISTRICT. (Rec. 7 p.m.) Sydney, October 26. All the pits in the Cessnock district are idle to-day, but efforts to induce a general stoppage of work failed.
