EDUCATION BOARDS

RETENTION FAVOURED. MR P. A. DE LA PERRELLE’S VIEWS. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, October 11. Speaking in defence of the retention of education boards during the course of his speech on the Financial Debate in the House of Representatives this afternoon, Mr P. A. de la Perrelle said that the abolition of the boards would mean a loss of community interest. The proposal to abolish educational boards was a most ill-considered recommendation. Mr Perrelle declared that the boards were most economically run and members were not paid for their services. To carry out the proposals of the commission would be to create an army qf inspectors while community interest would be lost through centralization. The cure would be worse than the disease. “Personally I am in favour of an amalgamation of education boards, high school boards and technical college boards in every education district,” he said, “but to do away with them altogether would be a serious mistake.”
