THEFT OF LIQUOR

STATIONMASTER SENT TO GAOL. (Per United Press Associati >n.) Dunedin, October 7. Edward James Les Cleary, formerly railway stationmaster at Allanton, was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment for the theft of 20 bottles of stout, the property of the Government. The police stated the stout was consigned from Dunedin to Owaka and was placed in the guard’s van. After the train had left Milton the guard noticed a package missing. The accused, who was on leave, travelled part of the way in the guard’s van. A search was made of accused’s house and three of the missing bottles were found. Accused was fond of drink.
