SHIPPING INDUSTRY
FALLING OFF IN TRADE. SUBSIDIZED SERVICES. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, October G. A special committee of the Chamber of Shipping submitted to the shipowners a scheme for the voluntary laying up of ships, but the replies indicated that the support was insufficient. The council decided to explore the possibilities of scrapping, and also discussed the serious position due to the continued decline in world trade and the growth of foreign subsidies for shipping. It endorsed the committee’s recommendation to place the matter before the Government with a view to having the matter remedied at the World Economic Conference, adding: “Failure to secure an agreement at the conference must inevitably force the United Kingdom to consider -methods to counteract the dumping of subsidized shipping services.”
