Have You Felt The Presence Of Fairies?

Take notice, all you “Wise Owls” who do not believe in fairies! We are out to change your views on the subject, however strongly you may oppose us. How can you, from the depths of your heart, say that you have never felt the presence of fairies? The day is dull and muggy; not a breath of wind stirs; motor vehicles race along the roads, leaving you to trudge along in their wake, enveloped in clouds of dust; suddenly, from a near-by house you catch faint strains of music—sweet notes that seem like drops of water to you. Have you never felt that something quite apart from this world was pattering up and down the keys?

You are waiting for a letter from someone dear to you; as each day passes you watch for it, growing more and more anxious; one afternoon you become so tired of seeing the postman go past, that you go out; you come home heart-sore and snappy, and go to your room; but behold—lying on the passage floor is a letter, staring whitely up at you and you rush forward excitedly. It surprises me to suppose that you have never felt as if some mischievous being had placed ti there! When you are sitting In the kitchen, all alone; your feet are somewhere about the height of the rack, and your detective story is most absorbing; a death-like hush is over all; occasionally a flame in the grate flickers; then, quite unexpectedly the kettle begins

to sing. You are not startled very much, but have you never felt that there was some sprite in there, pushing up the lid, and blowing out the steam?

Another time when you are lying out on the grass in the shade of the big tree; you are L'eling drowsy and somehow the flowers, each individual thing seems magnified in size—taking on an important place in the order of things; have you never felt that so they must appear to the fairies—if they exist?

When you have a nagging headache, and your brow feels as if it is on fire, you go out into the dark world, and gaze at the starry heavens; a soft breath caresses your forehead, soothing it. Don’t you think it might be a Fairy’s kiss? There are many Instances, if only you would look for them; but all you people who refuse to believe in fairies do not do this. I wish you would try after this, and just think how you would be helping them because for every person who dis-believes, one life b to depart from Fairyland. —Cousin Constance Fox (15), 94 Earn street, Invercargill. A Painting Competition. You will notice a special competition advertised on this page, cousins, which should thrill that large section of you that is always asking me for painting competitions. I notice that crayons will do as well as paints, and that ages will be taken into consideration in the judging, so that everybody stands an equal chance. I hope to see lots of Little Southlanders’ names amongst the prizewinners.
