BALFOUR NOTES
(From Our Correspondent.) On Friday evening last the local branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held a successful social in the hall. The ante-room was arranged for cribbage players, under the control of Mrs Henderson, while a ping-pong table on the stage was under the charge of Mrs R. T. Wilson. In the main hall were tables for five hundred and euchre, under the supervision of Mrs M. Rasmussen and Mr A. O. Henderson respectively. At the conclusion of play the winners in the various sections proved to be: Cribbage, Mrs W. Burgess and Mr M. Rasmussen; ping-pong, Miss Rebie Wilson and Mr D. Bruce; five hundred, Miss J. Muir and Mr A. Orr; euchre, Miss Wilma Casey and Mr E. Forde. As the prize won by Mr Orr had been donated by himself, he asked that it be handed to the runner-up, Mr A. Muir. Mrs D. R. McTaggart, president of the local branch, before handing over the various prizes, thanked all donors of trophies, those in charge of the tables, and all who assisted in making the evening such a success. After supper, the floor was cleared and a dance was held.
On Saturday evening a number of friends gathered at the new home of Mr and Mrs John Dillon, Ardlussa. Cards and dancing, interspersed with musical items, whiled away the time until near midnight. Mr R. T. Wilson, on behalf of the “house-warmers,” congratulated Mr and Mrs Dillon on the building of such a fine home, and wished them and their family many happy years’ residence. Just now most farmers found it hard to carry on as they were, and the fact that Mr Dillon was in a position to rebuild at such a time was proof of his ability as a farmer. Mr Dillon thanked the visitors for their good wishes. A painful accident befel Mrs A. McLean, Black Swamp, on Saturday morning, as a result df which she is at present an inmate of the Gore Public Hospital. Mrs McLean was crossing her yard when she slipped and fell. She called her husband, who assisted her inside the house. After receiving medical advice the sufferer was motored to Gore, where it was found that a bone was broken just above the ankle. The patient is now making good progress. Mrs W. Leitch and Mrs A. Stevens are inmates of the Gore Hospital, where they are making speedy recoveries from their respective operations. Mrs G. Grant has gone north on an extended holiday.
