OTAUTAU

The members of the Croquet Club held a very enjoyable bridge and five hundred evening in aid of the funds on Friday, when there was a good attendance. The winners were: Bridge, Mrs Chisholm and Mr P. McKenzie; five hundred, Mrs P. Mackenzie and Mr Thompson. The president (Mrs Sinclair), presented the prizes for the evening, and also those won during the season, as follows: Yankee tournament (prize donated by Miss O’Brien), Miss Shaw; handicap competition (prize donated by Miss Shaw), Miss D. O’Brien; coaching individual players (prize donated by Miss Hay) Mrs Hall. Mr E. Matheson (president) and Miss M. Ledingham (secretary), were the guests of the members of the Cribbage Club at a social evening last week. Progressive cribbage was played, the prizes being won by Mrs E. Matheson (11 games) and Mr P. Sheridan (8 games). Mr T. Kelly, on behalf of those present, expressed the thanks and appreciation of members for the good they had done in the interests of the club during the season. Although it had been a strenuous season through their good work everything had gone off without a hitch and one and all had enjoyed the games with other clubs, and especially the friendly games between north and south Otautau and ladies and men. Miss Ledingham and Mr Matheson had devoted a good deal of their time in assembling the teams and it said much for their energy that they had always had a full complement of players for all matches. Otautau had the name amongst other clubs of being the most sociable in the competition, and this was due in no small measure to the lead given by Mr Matheson, who played the game in a true sporting spirit. While they had a president and secretary of their calibre the club would never look back, and it was to be hoped they would both be on deck next year to keep the flag flying. Mr A. Fisher, in endorsing these remarks, referred to the high esteem in which the president was held stating that he had held this position with credit for the past three years. In asking Miss Legingham to accept a pair of kid gloves and Mr Matheson a travelling bag, Mr Kelly wished them every success in the future. The recipients suitably acknowledged the gifts, Miss Ledingham thanking members for their assistance during the year. Mr Matheson made special meniton of the manner in which Miss Ledingham had carried out her duties as secretary, and for her assistance generally. Mrs McKay, who has been the guest of Mr and Mrs A. Matheson, returned to Waikaia on Saturday.
