BURSARY SYSTEM

CHANGES EXPLAINED EXAMINATION ESSENTIAL STATEMENT BY DIRECTOR (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, September 25. The Director of Education, Mr T. B. Strong, states that some uncertainty appears to exist with regard to the changes made in the university bursary system by the National Bursary regulations issued on August 18. Stated as briefly as possible, the main changes were as follows: Candidates who secure a place on the credit list at the University Entrance Scholarship examinations will as heretofore be awarded bursaries. The alternative qualification formerly allowed, namely, the holding of a higher leaving certificate from a secondary school, will no longer be sufficient to secure a bursary. AU candidates are now required to qualify at the University Entrance Scholarship examination, a freer choice of subjects being allowed to candidates who are sitting for bursary qualification alone. Those who enter for scholarship qualification enter automatically for university bursaries also. Students who qualified for bursaries under the old system will not now be able to claim a bursary, but will require to qualify at the University Entrance Scholarship examination as indicated above. Candidates who secure the necessary qualification at the examination will not automatically receive bursaries, but should apply for these to the Director of Education by February 1.
