RIFLE SHOOTING

CITY GUARDS CLUB. On Saturday afternoon the City Guard’s Defence Rifle Club fired the first of three stages of a handicap competition for the J. T. Wilson Challenge Cup at the Otatara range, ten shots being fired at 300 and 500 yards. The conditions for shooting (with the exception of a short period at the first range when rain fell) were good, the light front wind being fairly steady throughout. At 300 yards J. Ure was top with a good 47, his card reading: 553555455.5—17. F. E. Wright with 5445 445555—46 was next. A. N. Smith with 5554545545—47 headed the list at 500 yards followed by J. Ure 46, L. Adams 46, E. J. McLauchlan 46 and J. Tansley 46. The best aggregates for the two ranges were J. Ure 93, F. E. Wright 91, J. Tansley 91, L. Adams 90, A. N. Smith 90. Following were the scores:

The second stage, 10 shots at 500 and 600 yards, will be fired on Saturday, October 8. Owing to the range being required by the Defence Department there will be no club shoot next Saturday.

INVERCARGILL DEFENCE CLUB.

T. HENSHELWOOD’S SEVEN-SHOT POSSIBLE.

The opening match of the Invercargill Defence Rifle Club’s new season was held at Otatara on Saturday afternoon when the first competition for the H. and J. Smith Cup was fired over 300, 500 and 600 yards, seven shots at each. The weather was fine, with a cold south-east wind which made things unpleasant, although shooting conditions were favourable. Some good scores were registered, T. E. Henshelwood getting the possible at 500 yards, while W. Milley missed it by a point at 600 yards, making 34. At 300 yards A. R. Wills was top with 32, as follows, 5445545. At 500 yards T. E. Henshelwood’s score read—5555555. H. W. Watson 34 and N. Mac Williams 33 also shot

well at this range. At 600 yards W. Milley’s card read: 5455555. The best aggregate off the rifle was made by T. E. Henshelwood, 96. Following are the scores with handicaps:—

There will be no shooting next Saturday. The final of the Smith Cup, 500 and 600 yards, will be fired on October 8. • -
