BUILDING SUBSIDIES

SOUTHLAND FROZEN MEAT CO.

QUESTION BY MR D. McDOUGALL.

(From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, September 23,

Reference to building subsidies under the Unemployment Board’s No. 10 Scheme was made in the House this afternoon when Mr D. McDougall gave notice to ask the Minister of Employment whether it was the intention of the Unemployment Board to subsidize the Southland Frozen Meat Company 33 1-3 per cent, on labour for the extension of their works at Mataura.

“This company,” said Mr McDougall, “has paid-up capital of £112,000. It paid last year a dividend of 12 per cent, on share capital; 25 per cent, of the stock was watered and no reduction had been given to farmers on their freezing charges. It was never intended that a wealthy company like this should get relief in that direction out of the shilling in the pound wages and salaries tax.”
