CROQUET

OTAUTAU CLUB. (From Our Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Otautau Croquet Club was held in the pavilion on Monday evening, when Miss D. O’Brien (president) presided over a fair attendance of members.

The president (Miss D. O’Brien) submitted the following report: In presenting the annual report and balancesheet for last season, I have to congratulate members on the successful year experienced. The membership was well maintained, including five beginners, who showed promise of being good playere. Club competitions held during the season Were won by the following: Yankee tournament, Miss Shaw (prize donated by the president); handicap competitions, Miss D. O’Brien (prize donated by Miss Shaw); coaching individual players, Mrs Hall (prize donated by Miss Hay); A grade singles button, Miss Hay; doubles buttons, Misses Hay and Campbell; B grade singles button, Mrs Duncan; doubles buttons, Mrs Burns and Miss Donnan. The club was successful in winning three out of four association matches, and Mrs Porteous, Misses Campbell, Hay and O’Brien competed at the Invercargill tournament held in February and put up a creditable performance, Misses Hay and Campbell being runners-up in the B grade onen doubles. On closing day opportunity was taken to farewell Mrs Keith prior to her leaving on a trip abroad. Since the season closed the lawns have been top-dressed. The committee owe a debt of gratitude to Mr Ferry for the time and attention he has given to the lawns and the surroundings, and judging from present appearances the lawns should have a playing surface this season as good as any in Southland, and it is hoped that members wi’l take advantage of it and try to improve their play to a higher standard. Our

thanks are due to Mrs Hall and Miss Hay, who acted as green rangers. Our thanks are due to the bowlers for assisting the club by giving an afternoon on the bowling green. During the winter successful card evenings were held to augment the funds. A donation was sent to the Hawkes Bay Club in response to their appeal for assistance to repair damage caused by the earthquake. The finances of the club show a satisfactory credit balance. The thanks of the club are due to Mrs Porteous (secretary), Miss Shaw (treasurer) and Miss Hay (captain) for the efficient manner in which they carried out their respective duties. In conclusion I thank all members who worked in the interests of the club a'nd for their co-operation in making my term of office a pleasant one. I wish the incoming committee continued success. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Mrs G. Sinclair; vice-presidents. Mrs G. B. Bums and Mrs A. Chisholm; secretary, Mrs W. Porteous; treasurer, Miss Shaw; committee, Mesdames Sinclair, Duncan, Porteous, Burns, Chisholm, White, Misses Hay, Campbell, Shaw, O’Brien and Donnan; club captain, Miss Hay; green rangers, Mrs Hall and Miss Hay. The subscription was fixed the same as last year. The opening day was fixed for October 5, and it was decided to have competitions, with a charge of 3d for each. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr M. Ferry for the work he had done on the croquet lawn, the secretary beirg directed to forward a letter of appreciation of the services he had rendered.
