Miss Mollie Pears, of Etalvale Station who has been visiting the North Island, is the guest of Mrs G. J. P. Denny, St. Clair, Dunedin. Miss Hazel Hamilton returned to Winton yesterday after having been the guest of Miss Mollie Hamilton, Don street, for a week. Mrs W. G. Clark and Miss Myra Clark, Hensley street, return by this evening’s express after a holiday m Christchurch and Dunedin.

Mason, of Bluff, who is holidaying in the North Island, has been staying in Christchurch as the guest of her aunt, Mrs A. Roberts, Office road, St. Albans, and of her sister, Nurse Partridge. Mrs J, D. Campbell was hostess at afternoon tea at her home in Morton road on Saturday afternoon in honour of Mrs C. L. Grange. The afternoon was spent in competitions and music. Mrs Campbell presented Mrs Grange with a posy of spring flowers, with her loving thoughts and best wishes for the future in her new home in Thames.

Mrs J. D. Campbell, Morton road, was hostess at a children’s party on Saturday evening in honour of Margaret and Lyell Grange. At a suitable interval lan Campbell presented gifts to both the guests of honour.

Pleasant weather and a happy spirit of comradeship prevailed for the ladies’ Golf tournament this week. A birthday cake, presented by Mrs W. Handyside, was cut on the first day, and last evening the ladies of the Invercargill Club held a successful bridge drive in the Mary Elizabeth to mark the close of the tournament. The winners of the golf trophies were: Replica of cup, Mrs H. M. Smith; trophy presented by Mrs Handyside (president) for run-ner-up, Mrs McCarthy; medal round trophy, Misses Masters and Thomson; bogey handicap trophies, Mesdames Garrett and McCreary; four ball prizes, Mrs W. Bews and Miss Todd; putting prizes for each day, Mesdames McCreary, Haggitt and Gilmour; putting aggregate, Mrs Haggitt; trophy presented by Mrs Fordyce for lowest gross score, Mrs McCarthy; trophy for best gross score in bogey, Mrs McCreary. Dances given by the Southland High School Old Girls’ Association are invariably popular and the success of the function held in the Country .Club on Wednesday evening must have been gratifying to the committee and to the secretary, on whose shoulders the bulk of the responsibility rested. As the result of the bridge and 500 evening held in the Federal on September 14 in aid of the Nurses’ Memorial Fund, the Southland Branch of the N.Z. Trained Nurses’ Association forwarded to the committee ,in charge of the above memorial fund the sum of £2O. The executive of the Southland Branch of the Trained Nurses’ Association has expressed their sincere appreciation to those who so willingly assisted by donations and attendance.

The Country Club Cabaret presented a very animated and colourful appearance on Monday evening, when Mr and Mrs W. H. Latta, of Tahakopa, entertained their friends in honour of the coming-of-age of their daughter, Audrey. A very jolly time was spent in games, cards and dancing. Supper was daintily served in the Banquet Hall and during the interval the guest of honour was presented with a beribboned key and a small gold key in the form of a brooch, to commemorate the occasion. The flowers at the Southland Women’s Club were a picture on Thursday evening for the visit of the Gore Music Circle. The great bowls of flowering currant and narcissi had been arranged by Mrs McKay, of Coldstream, and came in for a great deal of admiration. Before the evening commenced, Mrs Stanley Brown asked the assembly to stand in silence as a tribute to the late Mrs J. T. Prain, who had been an enthusiastic member of the Circle for many years. During this tribute Mrs C. R. S. Barrett played “Coronach.” It was also decided that letters should be sent to Mrs J. Johnston and Mrs Duncan McFarlane, both of whom are at present indisposed. Mrs Brown then welcomed the visitors from Gore, handing over the Circle meeting to Mrs J. A. Edwards, chairwoman of the Gore Music Circle. The following very enjoyable programme was given by the visitors:—Pianoforte solo by Miss Sheehan—“Autumn” (Chaminade); song by Mrs Cooper—“ June in My Heart”; recitation by Miss S. The committee responsible for the success of the function was Mr Warwick Gregory (president), S. W. M. Stilling (hon. gen. secretary), R. A. Davison (hon. treasurer), Roy Hill (chairman). Messrs C.
