FORTROSE NOTES
CONCERT. Humphreys’ Hall, Fortrose, was packed to its capacity on Wednesday evening last, when a concert organized by Mrs W. H. S. Hine in aid of the local Anglican Church funds, was presented. The first part of the programme was devoted to individual items, Misses Clark and Millard contributing pianoforte solos, while songs were given by the Rev. E. G. Evans, Messrs C. McCalman, G. Martin and J. S. Sinclair and elocutionary items by Messrs G. and N. Andrews. The second part consisted of a one-act play entitled “Between the Soup and the Savoury,” in which Misses E. Shirley, L. Humphries and G. Hurle took the principal parts. The performers acquitted themselves admirably, the dialogue and acting being of a high standard. The appreciation of the audience was shown by each of these performers being presented with a bouquet. A pleasant function took place on Friday evening last, when the members of the Fortrose Ladies’ Hockey Club paid a surprise visit to the residence of Mr and Mrs W. Whittingham to bid them farewell before leaving the district, Mr Whittingham having been promoted to a higher position. The evening was spent in music, cards and playing games. Miss E. Shirley acted as chairwoman and expressed the regret of the club at the impending departure of Mrs Whittingham who, during the past two seasons, had taken a keen interest and been of great assistance to the club. On behalf of the club she had pleasure in presenting Mrs Whittingham with an English china cup, saucer and pla’te and wished both Mr and Mrs Whittingham health and happiness in their new sphere of labour. Mr and Mrs Whittingham suitably replied. Misses L. Humphries, G. Hurle and I. and M. White will leave Fortrose on Wednesday, August 24, to join the Southland ladies’ hockey representative team to take part in the K Cup competition.
