BASKETBALL

SENIOR TOURNAMENT AT WINTON. WINTON WIN BUTTONS. (From Our Correspondent. Under the auspices of the Central District Basketball Sub-Association, the senior teams of the district participated in a tournament on the Winton tennis courts on Wednesday afternoon. There was a large gathering at the fixture, for which conditions were dry, but a cold south-easterly wind was most unpleasant and at intervals affected the play. The play throughout was of an unusually high, standard, and the interest of the spectators vras maintained until the final. The Winton team won the silver buttons that were at stake after giving some first class displays, accounting for Oreti ana Rovers in the first and second rounds respectively and defeating Kia Ora, the district premiers, by two go als. in the final after a bright exhibition. The final of the junior section between Browns and Rovers was also played, and after an interesting and keenly contested exhibition Ryal Bush won by one goal, and thus won the junior premiership for 1932. The tourney was run efficiently by the executive of the Central Sub-As-sociation and the success of the fixture was due in no small measure to the complete arrangements that had been made. The referees were Messrs Kelly, W. Norman and R. Reid. The results were as follows:— FIRST ROUND. Kia Ora 9 beat Limehills 4. Winton 16 beat Oreti 9. In this round Lochiel and Rovers had byes. SECOND ROUND. Kia Ora 9 beat Lochiel 5. Winton 16 beat Rovers 9. FINAL. Winton 11 beat Kia Ora 9. One of the most interesting and fastest games seen in the district for some time was the encounter between these two old rivals. Winton gave a good display and thoroughly deserved their success, although there was very little between either team. Kia Ora’s exhibition was well up to their usual high standard. The defences of both teams played well with Winton holding a slight advantage, although, the court work and shooting of the Kia Ora forwards were very good, while the same applied to the Winton trio. The chief advantage Winton held was in the centre third, where the Red line excelled themselves against formidable rivals. Very few chances were missed by the forwards of either team. The teams were:— Winton: —Forwards, Misses M. Balch, D. Humphrey, E. Scobie; centres, Misses K. Bell, K. Boyle, A. Holland; defences, Misses H. Hamilton, E. Pierce, D. Hagerty. Kia Ora:—Forwards, Misses N. Norman, K. Crowe, I. Egerton; centres, Misses F. Thombury, E. Norman, V. Crowe; defences, Misses M. Collett, A. Butler, M. Butler. Kia Ora made a good start and converted four goals in quick succession, but Winton retaliated and almost immediately scored three on end, making the score 4—3 in favour of Kia Ora at the interval. Winton brought the scores to 4-all by a good- goal immediately after the interval, and level scoring continued to within five minutes of the final whistle when the scores were 8-all. Two fine movements by Winton culminated in goals, while an equally smart piece of work bore fruit for Kia Ora, making the scores 10—9 in favour of Winton. Another conversion by Winton just on time put the issue beyond doubt, and the final whistle sounded with the scores: Winton 11, Kia Ora 9. JUNIOR PLAY-OFF. RYAL BUSH BEAT BROWNS.

An interesting game on the tennis courts at Winton on Wednesday afternoon was the play-off between Ryal Bush and Browns for the premiership of the junior section. A bright even contest eventuated and the success of Ryal Bush was well deserved. In the early part of the first spell Browns held the uppei hand, while for the remainder of this spell Ryal Bush were sup-' erior. Browns had by far the better of the game in the second spell. The Browns forward line received an abundance of ball, but they could not get within shooting distance of the goal. The Ryal Bush forwards could have been much more accurate, while the Browns trio made most of their chances when within firing distance. Browns opened the scoring by converting one goal after a number of good chances had gone astray. Tire Ryal Bush forwards were somewhat erratic. The scores reached 2-aIl, and Ryal Bush led 5—3 at the interval. Browns goaled immediately after the start of the second spell and Ryal Bush followed with two in succession, making the scores 7—4 in favour of Ryal Bush. Browns rallied and made all the play, but their efforts were too late, for after they had reduced the margin to 7—6 against them the final whistle sounded. Mr R. Reid was referee.
