HARRIERS

INVERCARGILL CLUB.

Quite the best muster for some time assembled at the Railway Social Hall last Saturday, for the weekly club run, and conditions were better than they have been for the last few runs. In view of the near approach of road races it was decided to keep to the road and approximately eight miles were covered, in a run to the New River Bridge and back. On the return journey instead of the usual short run in, members of the pack made their own pace practically the whole way, and good form was displayed. Gordon Ker particularly was running very easily and led home by about 50 yards from E. Moyle and W. Pickard. A run such as this, each Saturday and the necessary training during the week should have members fit for the next inter-club race for the Harrier Shield on August 20. For this race a new and better course has been chosen, commencing form the south end of the Rose Gardens, on the cinder track, a total distance of five miles. Invercargill Club harriers are keen to avenge their defeat by St Pauls’ in the cross country race, and this can only be made possible by each man seeing that he is properly fit before the race. The projected visit by Dunedin harriers, to compete in this race is not yet finalized, but it is hoped to have several entries from this quarter in the near future. Such a visit of some of the crack harriers in Dunedin would do much to boost the sport here, and at the same time give an opportunity of comparing the talent in road work of the respective centres. Apparently on account of the very cold and wet weather experienced of late, there have not been many recruits to this sport, but before the season closes it is hoped to see quite a few new members out. The beneficial and healthful results obtained from harrier running are ascertained after one rim and full enjoyment is experienced in any weather. It has now been decided to hold the club five miles road race on August 6, from the Municipal Baths, the course to be the same as that over which this race was held last year. In holding it then, will give competitors some idea how they are going for the inter-club race a fortnight after. Included in the second syllabus is a combined run at Greenhills on September 10, and this should provide an excellent outing. Jim Bremer is familiar with the country there, and he can be relied on to pick a good course. Members are asked to make a point of attending this run. To-day for the concluding run of the first syllabus the two clubs will combine and run from Waikiwi Sunday School Hall at 2.30 p.m. Members of the Invercargill Club will meet at the Waikiwi School at 2.30 p.m. This run will be followed by a tea in the Brown Owl tearooms at 5.30 p.m. and it is expected that all members will make a point of being present ST. PAUL’S CLUB. Last Saturday the pack had an excellent run of about 8 miles from Georgetown Presbyterian Sunday School Hall, Venus Street. A trial was laid by H. Georgeson and F. Tannock. From the hall it led down Venus Street along John Street and into the country for about 2J miles, coming back to the road at the Oteramika and cemetery roads corner. From there on the run was chiefly on a hard surface, the trail following Oteramika road and Mill road then back to cemetery road along the railway line, across a couple of paddocks to Oteramika road and home via the latter and Venus Street. There was a large muster out and the pack under the whistle of W. E. Mclndo kept up a good steady pace with few stops, over the whole distance. In a run home of about 880 yards the pack was still well bunched, Mclndo, Swift, Hind and Lindsay filling the first four places.
