RUGBY FOOTBALL

TO-DAY’S DRAW. , PIRATES v. WAIKIWL Club game? will be resumed this afternoon, and although the result of the Galbraith Shield competition' is now known, there is still sufficient, interest in the concluding games to merit a good attendance at the Park this afternoon. Of most interest will be the third meeting of Pirates and the improved Waikiwi team. Waikiwi hold the distinction of being the only team in the competition to stop Pirates’ winning run by drawing with the Blacks in the second round. On that occasion the suburban team put up a good showing and just failed on time to inflict defeat on Pirates. To-day should see a good tussle with Pirates striving hard to preserve their unbeaten record and Waikiwi battling for victory. Pirates’ chances are favoured, but they will have to go hard all the way to secure victory. The other senior game is that between Old Boys and Star and.it will also contain fresh interest for patrons, mainly owing to Old Boys’ ability to make an open game of it. Star will present solid opposition. TENNIS • ENGLAND v. AUSTRALIA. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, July 28. Playing in the England v. Australia match at Scarborough, Perry beat Hopman 6—3, 6—2, 10—8; Lee beat Crawford 4—6, 6—3, 2—6, 6—2, B—6. DAVIS CUP. DRAW FOR FRIDAY. Paris, July 28. The Davis Cup draw for Friday is BOrotra v. Vines and Cochet v. Allison and for Sunday Borotra v. Allison and Cochet v. Vines. It is considered that the luck of the draw favoured America. The French would have liked Cochet to meet Vines on Friday, when he is fittest. As Borotra is playing in both singles, the doubles team is likely to be Cochet and Brugpon. Cochet therefore faces Vines in the third successive day’s play whereas Vines rests on Saturday. The American doubles pair are expected to be Alliso. and Van Ryn. GOLF GORE LADIES’ CLUB.. (By “Mimihau.”) About 20 players took part in the July medal competition played at Wyndham on Wednesday and Saturday of last week. The greens and fairways were again in good order. The majority of players expected to play to their handicaps on Wednesday, but a cold easterly sprang up and the cards handed in were disappointing. Gibson with a round of 94—21—73 had the best net score. Only two Saturday players turned out and although the day was not favourable for good golf, Tangney with an excellent card of 90 —24—66 came in an easy winner. Pankhurst also played well, his card being 90—15—75, placing him third on the list. Tangney, who has been showing improved form during the past month, was fully expected to win but to beat the scratch score by five strokes was an excellent performance. The ringer competition has now reached a very interesting stage and about ten players have excellent prospects of heading the list before the season concludes. The best scores to date with half handicap deducted are: Gibson, 73—10J—62J; Henderson, 67-4—63; Barnett, 66—5—63; Heath, 74—11—63; Harper, 76—10—66. Crawford, Pankhurst, Ball and Rout have all net 69’s. BASKETBALL OTAGO B DEFEAT EASTERN. MATCH. AT GORE. The Eastern District representative basketball team played its first match of the season yesterday afternoon on the Gore School courts, losing to Otago B by 18 goals to 13. The teams were as follows:— . Otago B: Forwards: L. Hoffman, M. McDonald, J. Harvey; centres, V. Irwin, M. Hannigan, C. Grace; defence, I, Barron, R. Smythe (captain), J. Buchanan. ; . Forwards, M. Hutton, I Scott, B. Oswin (capt.); centres, E. Martin, D. Smith, E. Columb; defence, D. Fitzgerald, M. McGovan, K. Bates. The opening exchanges went in favour of Otago, whose passing and positional play was superior to that of Eastern. As the result of several good movements Otago assumed a fair lead, the shooting of Miss McDonald being particularly accurate. With the score 7 to 1 against them, Eastern began to make up leeway and at half-time had reduced the margin to two goals, Otago leading B—6. . Otago also opened strongly In the

second spell and due to exceptionally strong defence the ball seldom reached Eastern’s shoots in a scoring position. On the other hand Otago’s positional play was good and time after time the ball went to Miss McDonald, who seldom failed to goal. During the latter half of the spell, however, Eastern again assumed the offensive and substantially reduced Otago’s lead. Miss Hutton was the outstanding shoot for Eastern, but due to the sound Otago defence, her opportunities were limited. The final score was Otago 18, Eastern 13. Otago’s goals were scored by M. McDonald 13, L. Hoffman 3 and F. J. Harvey 2. Eastern’s goals were scored by M. Hutton 12 and I. Scott 1. Mrs Mclnnes was referee. RIFLE SHOOTING. THE MINIATURE RANGE. “R” CUP COMPETITION.
