RESEARCH WORK
CANCER CAMPAIGN OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND DIVISION £24,000 SUBSCRIBED (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, July 28. A meeting of the Otago and Southland division of the New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign was held in the Town Hall to-day and presided over by Sir Louis Barnett (chairman). Since the campaign was first instituted in Otago and Southland in November, 1929, the gratifying sum of £24,400 has been subscribed to this cause through the generosity of the citizens of Otago and Southland. No further appeal for funds is contemplated in the meantime, as the money now in hand is quite satisfactory for the present. A full statement of the financial position of the local division was made and approved by the meeting. A report was submitted by Dr D’Ath explaining the work of the local consultation clinic, and the growing success of the clinic, which is becoming increasingly useful in earlier diagnosis and more effective treatment. Special stress was laid on the importance of prompt notification, as was shown by the records of attacking the disease in the early stages. The records already studied indicated that the great majority of cancers in accessible positions, such as on the surface of the body, are curable by present surgical and radiation methods, while improved results in the more difficult class of internal cancers are anticipated from laboratory researches that are in progress at the Dunedin Medical School under the direction of Dr Begg. A report dealing With his work was submitted by Dr Begg, who is conducting in Dunedin researches which he classified under three headings: (1) Research into the nature of cancer ; (2) research for the diagnostic basis of cancer; (3) research into treatment. Sir Louis Barnett was re-elected' chairman of the division.
