NIOBE DISASTER
FORTY SURVIVORS COUNT VON LUCKNER NOT ABOARD SUDDEN SQUALL (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Berlin, July 27. Forty survivors who have arrived at Kiel on board the cruiser Koeln confirm that Count von Luckner was not on board the Niobe. The Koeln is continuing her search, but there is little hope of survivors. Two admirals who visited the scene state that no blame can be attached to the captain, as the squall was so. sudden that there was no possibility of manoeuvring and everything happened so quickly that the order to don lifebelts and lower the boats could not be executed. The majority of the victims were below attending a lecture prior to the final examinations.
According to eyewitnesses most of the portholes were open and the vessel sank in two minutes.
