LARGE LIST

SUPREME COURT SESSION. HIS HONOUR’S COMMENT. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, July 26. The quarterly criminal sessions opened this morning before Mr Justice Herdman and Mr Justice Smith. Mr Justice Herdman commented to the Grand Jury on the size and gravity of the list of cases, which included charges of murder, administering poison to a child, negligent driving thereby causing death (four) and robbery with violence. The Judge said: “The presence of the negligent driving charges in the calendar conveys the impression that some drivers still show a reckless disregard for the safety of their fellow citizens.”

Commenting on a charge of murder against a Maori boy of 16, who it is alleged, killed an old man in the Whangarei district by hitting him on the head with an axe, his Honour said the lad was alleged to have admitted the offence to the police.
