BLUFF NOTES

RETURNED SOLDIERS’ MEETING. (From Our Correspondent.) On Friday evening the Watersiders’ Band gave an interesting selection oi music in Gore street under the baton of Conductor E. Bigwood. Afterwards thq bandsmen played the local Basketball Club in the street, and although the girls played a more scientific game, the taller bandsmen ran out winners by 7 to 3. A large crowd lined the street for the contest. A meeting of the Returned Soldiers’ Association was held in the Drill Hall on Friday evening, the president, Mr N. W. McGorlick, being in the chair. The chief business of the evening was consideration of the proposal to hold the annual dance and euchre tournament at an early date. After a brief discussion it was unanimously decided that the function would take place m the Town Hall at an early date, the latter to be fixed on at a future meeting. A social committee was formed to attend to details. Those elected were: Messrs N. W. McGorlick, T. Finnerty, R. N. Porter, W. Crozier, W. Lowe, M. McTigue, W. Plank, J. Trembath, F. Barford, E. Walters, J. Harland, C. Winter and P. Young. The committee will meet in the Drill Hall on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.

Pipe Band. A well attended meeting of the Bluft Pipe Band was held in the bandroom on Wednesday evening. The chair was occupied by the Mayor (Mr T. F. Doyle), president of the band. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The secretary (Mr E. Parser) read letters from several residents of Bluff and district accepting office in the Pipe Band arid enclosing donations towards same. The chairman expressed his pleasure at the fact tha’ the band was now on a good footing. It was creating much interest and was receiving highly satisfactory support, Mr Doyle said, ana there was no reason why it should not become a regular feature of Blufrs social life. In returning thanks for being elected a vice-president of the band, and also a trustee, Mr W. B. Dixon said that he had been interested in music all his life and was pleased to see the present effort heading towards success. _ Personally, he believed the formation of a Pipe Band was a capital idea and would add interest to the town. .He assured the meeting of his active interest and support.

Additional office-holders were elected as follows: Trustees, Messrs T. F. Doyle, W. B. Dixon and L. P. Denton; treasurer, Mr G. Johnston; auditor, Mr D. Parry. It was decided to open an account in the local branch of the

Bank of New Zealand. Accounts amounting to £1 0/5 were passed for payment. Gun Club. Great keenness is being shown by members of the Bluff Clay Bird Gun Club in view of the fact that the Southland championship shoot will take place on the local club’s ground at Green Point Domain on Labour Day. The Bluff Club is not an old one, but it is made up of experienced members and it is safe to say the committee will have everything running smoothly when Labour Day arrives. On Saturday last a shoot was held at the Green Point grounds and, although the weather was on the unpleasant side, there was a very satisfactory attendance. Invercargill was represented by a number of competitors, while others were present from as far afield as Wairio and other outlying places. The prizes for the three events got off were well worth the winning, those attached to the main event (a 10-bird handicap) and consisting of a tea set and salad set, for first and second respectively, being very handsome trophies. Credit is due to Messrs G. V. Edge D. Campbell (secretary) and J. Doyle (handicapper) for their work in carrying out arrangements, while willing assistance was given by other members of the club. Messrs J. Doyle and W. Mackie shared the honours of the

meeting with a win and a tie for first each. Results: Six-bird sweepstake, J. Doyle and W. Mackie tie for first; D. Duggan and J. McEwing tie for third. The first pair divided the stake. Ten-bird trophy shoot: W. Mackie 1, J. McEwing 2. Both scored the possible, Mackie winning in the shootoff.
