CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
THE GORE BODY. QUARTERLY MEETING. The quarterly meeting of the Gore Chamber of Commerce was held last evening, the chairman (Mr A. J. Kerse) presiding over a large attendance of members. A letter was received from the Associated Chambers advising that the executive had had its attention drawn to the very serious question throughout the Dominion of the lack of employment for boys leaving school. It was suggested that officers of the local chambers might get in touch with officers of local unemployment committees with a view to making a special feature of this work. The chairman mentioned that the matter of vocational guidance had previously been taken up by the chamber and some time ago an excellently attended public meeting had been held at which a representative committee had been appointed. Since then, however, matters had been held in abeyance owing to the difficulty of securing the services of a suitable secretary. It was hoped, however, that this would soon be remedied and that the Vocational Guidance Committee appointed would commence to function. A further letter was received from the Associated Chambers stating that the representations of the Gore Chamber in regard to the payment of interest free of exchange by Crown tenants and discharged soldiers at the local Post Office had been receiving attention. So far they had been unable to come to a satisfactory conclusion with the Lands and Survey Department and were now in communication with the Minister. As soon as any definite decision was arrived at, the Gore Chamber would be advised. The letter was received, the chairman stating that the Associated Chambers was apparently not so confident as the Gore Chamber that the matter could be brought to a successful issue. Personally he could see no reason why the chamber’s representations could not be given effect to as it should only be a matter of arrangement between two Government departments. Mr A. A. Mac Gibbon moved that the Postmaster-General be congratulated on the reduction of postage rates and that the chamber expresses the hope that the move would be as beneficial to the State as it would undoubtedly be to the people. He also proposed that at the same time, the attention of the Postmaster-General be drawn to the necessity for making reductions in connection with telephone rentals . and telegrams. The motion was carried.
