AN AMALGAMATION
LABOUR AND UNEMPLOYMENT DEPARTMENTS. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 14. Consequent on the retirement of Mr Newton from the secretaryship of the Labour, the Public Service Commissioner announces that opportunity is being taken to give effect to the Government’s decision to amalgamate the Departments of Labour and Unemployment. The Commissioner of Unemployment, Mr G. C. Godfrey, assumes the duties of permanent head of the combined departments. It is said the effect of the amalgamation will be to place the control and management of all matters pertaining to labour and unemployment under one head. The existing organization, the Labour Department will now be more directly available for unemployment problems throughout New Zealand.
