Mrs J. Frew, Avondale, is the guest of her mother, Mrs R. Kidd, Park street. Mr and Mrs H. O. Barker and their daughter have taken up residence at Winton, where the former has commenced his duties as postmaster. Mr and Mrs C. Cameron, of Invercargill, were recent guests of Mrs M. G. McArthur, Great North Road. Miss Moana Menzies, of Lumsden, recently visited Mrs P. Gerrard, New River Road. Mrs A. J. Thomson and her daughter, Joyce, of Dunedin, who have been the guests of Mrs J. A. Walsh, Great North Road, have returned home. Mrs I. Barnett, of Invercargill, has been the guest of Mrs A. B. Fearn, Blackmount. Mr and Mrs P. A. Bradley, who have been on an extended visit to the North Island, are expected to return home next week. Miss Agnes Mcßean, who spent a few days at Winton, has returned to Pleasant Point. Miss R. McKenzie has returned home after visiting Invercargill. Mr and Mrs Wallace Lindsay and family, of Wellington, who have been visiting Mrs Lindsay’s mother, Mrs M. G. McArthur, Great North Road, have returned home. Miss Marion Tilley has returned from a holiday spent with Miss N. Young at Mossburn. Miss Isobel Gilmour has been visiting Dunedin. Miss Betty Hishon, of Otautau, spent the school vacation with her aunt, Mrs M. Hishon, of Oreti. Mrs W. Watson and family, Park street, spent the school holidays at Ocean Beach. Mrs R. D. Pearce and family, Park street, have returned from a visit to Riverton. Mrs R. J. Butt, Makarewa Junction, returned home last Saturday evening after spending a holiday at Dunedin and Timaru. Miss Gwen Cowie, East Limehills, recently spent a few days in Invercargill as the guest of Miss Audrey Roberts. Mrs T. W. Brandford has returned from a holiday spent at the Rocks, Riverton. Miss B. Kidd, who spent the school vacation with her mother, Mrs R. Kidd, Park street, has returned to Anderson’s Bay. Mrs G. Dixon and family, who have been spending a fortnight’s holiday at Lilbume Valley have returned home. Miss Mabel Watson, of Waimate, has returned after spending the vacation with her mother, Mrs I. Watson. Mrs J. B. Wilson, Queen street, has returned from Drmedin, where she was the guest of her daughter, Mrs C. F. Barham. On Tuesday evening at St. Thomas’s Tennis Club euchre tournament Miss D. Cahill and Miss M. Balch tied for the ladies’ prize and in the play off the latter was successful. Messrs T. Daly, J. Egerton and G. Bourke were equal for the men’s prize and in the play off Mr Daly was successful. The consolation prizes were won by Mrs M. J. Forde and Mr J. Bourke. The prize-winners at the weekly euchre tournament of the Forest Hill Tennis Club last Tuesday evening were Miss H. Clarke and Mr T. McKay. The anniversary of the Girl Guide movement was celebrated at Winton by a grand parade and service to the Winton Presbyterian Church at the Sunday morning service. Under the command of District Commissioner Dr. M. Gow, Captain R. Liddell and Lieutenants H. Hamilton and M. Martm, the company marched into the church. The pulpit was occupied by the Rev. A. Gardiner and the service was commenced by three of the colour-bearers presenting the minister with the Union Jack. Suitable hymns and prayers for the guide movement were the order of the service. At the commencement of his address Mr Gardiner wished tin. guide and ranger movements many more years of success. He was glad the Union Jack had been presented, as his principal address was on the designing of the flag.

A welcome home social and dance was extended to Mr and Mrs A. Thomson at Thomson’s Crossing on Tuesday evening last. An enjoyable dance was held in the barn, while during the evening items were given by Mrs L Smart and Mr W. Henderson. After supper Mr Smart presented to Mr and Mrs Thomson a dozen stainless knives on behalf of the gathering. In referring to the good qualities of the guests he mentioned that Mr Thomson had proved himself to be a first-class neighbour. On behalf of the company he wished Mr and Mrs Thomson every success in their married life. Messrs W. Henderson, J. H. Thomson and Elies also spoke. In replying on behalf of his wife and himself, Mr Thomson expressed thanks for the fine gift and also the laudatory remarks that had been expressed. Among those present were: Mr and Mrs H. Liddell, Mr and Mrs L. Smart, Mr and Mrs A. Thomson, Mr and Mrs J. Scobie, Mr and Mrs P. Shaw, Mr and Mrs W. Henderson, Mr and Mrs J. Thomson (Centre Bush), Mr and Mrs Clouston, Mesdames A. L. Scobie, D. and E. Blythe, D. Malcolm, R. Fidler, B. Scobie, J. Crane, J. Munro, McFadzien (2), T. Patterson, J. Duthie, J. Cunningham, O’Shannessey, J. H. Thomson, McConachie, Elies, Clarke, Simons. During the evening the opportunity was also taken to present Miss C. Thomson with a xylonite set prior to her departure from the district. The monthly meeting of the Winton branch of the Plunket Society was held on Thursday afternoon last, the president, Mrs W. H. King, presided over the following members: Mesdames J. R. Hamilton, G. Rouse, J. Henderson (Matai),W. Hamilton, T. S. Smith (Oreti), A. Hamilton (Browns) and Miss I. G. Russell (secretary). Mrs J. R. Hamilton extended a hearty welcome to the new president and wished her a successful term of office. Mrs King gave an account of the annual meeting held at Lumsden last month and also reported that Nurse Sims had commenced duties on the fifth of the present month. Resignations from ■ Mesdames G. Cowan, W. H. Thomson and D. F. O’Malley were received with regret. The proceeds of the cake competition were handed in by Mrs M. Reilly. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Hamilton for baking the cake and also Mrs Reilly for taking charge of the competition. Mrs H. Cowie, of Browns, who has been holidaying in Dunedin, has returned home.

Miss E. McDermott, who has been in Invercargill for some time, has returned to Winton. On Monday evening, May 23, a series of euchre tournaments was commenced in the Masonic Hall under the auspices of the Central Bowling Club. There was a fair attendance and the prizewinners were Mrs H. A. Pierce and Mr J. Lawrence. On Thursday evening last the weekly card tourney run under the supervision of the Winton Fire Brigade was continued in the Oddfellow’s Hall when there was a good attendance. The prize-winners were Mrs R. P. Symons and Mr T. Hunt. An enjoyable dance followed for which music was supplied by the Black Cat Orchestra, while extras were contributed by Misses M. Tilley and H. Cowie.
