Miss Mary Robertson, “Struan,” South Riverton, has returned from Dunedin. The fortnightly euchre tournament in aid of the Football Club, held in the board room on Monday evening, May 23, was well attended, and some closely contested games were witnessed. In the ladies’ section Mrs W. Hawke carried off first prize, Miss W. Clark being second. Mr W. Troon and Mr W. Hopwood were first and second respectively in the men’s class, while Mrs Spencer, senr., and Mr J. Thompson were awarded the minor prizes. Those present were: Mesdames C. Gray, W. J. Winton, McLean senr., W. Hopwood, J. Hume, J. Rose, Spencer senr., W. Hawke, J. Rogers, Trembath, Misses Clark, Woodward, Mills, Dunlea, Messrs Rogers, G. Lockett, Stenton, J. McKay, T. Henderson, W. Mrs A. Boniface and family have been visiting friends in Invercargill. Miss Eva Hopwood has returned from an enjoyable holiday spent at Invercargill and Dunedin. The Anglican Church Social Club had another enjoyable evening on Thursday which took the form of a social and dance. The Rev. Mr Thompson was M.C. and Miss Price gave a solo. Music was supplied by Mrs T. R. Abercrombie, Misses Dickson (2), Walden, Hancock and Mr R. Dickson. The Monte Carlo one-step was won by Miss M. Hopwood and Mr H. W. Rogers. Amongst those present were: Mesdames G. Stevenson, J. Wohlers, B. Hancock, T. R. Abercrombie, R. Davis, Hunter (2), J. A. Mackenzie, Stenton, Bailey, G. A tea party was given by the Girl Guide Committee in the Presbyterian Sunday School Hall on Friday evening to children of the unemployed. Before tea games were played and the young folks thoroughly enjoyed themselves. About 100 sat down to tea, at the termination of which the Rev. F. O. Prosser thanked the committee for its kindness and all who had assisted. Musical items were much appreciated by all. Among the committee and friends present were the following: The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs E. B. Patrick), Mesdames E. Gray, J. A. Martin, D. C. Robertson, H. J. Walden, C. A. Caigou, G. L. Dickson, T. R. Abercrombie, J. A. Mackenzie, N. G. Trotter, E. A. Trail, B. Hancock, A. D. Angus, T. J. Price, the Rev. and Mrs F. O. Prosser, the Rev. Mr Thompson, the Rev. Mr McFarlane, Ensign Kermode, Misses Hunt, Houston, Carmichael and a large number of Girl Guides and Brownies.

The Girl Guides had a busy time at the week-end. On Saturday their number was increased by an enrolment ceremony, and they attended the picture entertainment in the evening. On Sunday they held a church parade, and visited the Wallace Hospital in the afternoon, leaving a number of gifts and cheering up the patients. 'They also paid the cemetery a visit, placing beautiful floral tributes on the graves of the late Mrs J. R. Reidie (Gropers) and Mrs L. W. Petchell—two ladies who had taken a prominent part in the Girl Guide movement and who had won the love, respect, and esteem of the girls associated with the organization. Mrs Bell, Dunedin, is visiting Mr and Mrs C. A. Caigou. The Rev. and Mrs L. Richards, Dunedin, are visiting the Rev. and Mrs N. J. Thomson. Misses McCulloch, of Christchurch, who have been spending a week’s holiday at Riverton, have left for home. Mrs Brandford, who has been visiting relatives at South Riverton, has returned to Winton. Mr and Mrs T. R. Abercrombie and fami.' ■ have returned from a holiday spent in Gore and Dimedin. Mrs S. Bell, who has been visiting her mother, Mrs T. J. Price, has returned to Bluff. A most successful dance was held at Thornbury on Thursday evening. There was a large attendance, all parts of the district being represented. The funds of the Tennis Club, for which the dance was organized, will be considerably augmented thereby. The Ambassadors’ Orchestra supplied the music, Miss Riddle playing an extra.
