Mrs J. S. Aitken left on Friday last on a holiday visit to Timaru. Miss Joan Oswin returned last week from a holiday spent in the North Island. On Thursday evening Mrs R. G. Scott entertained a number of young people in honour of her son Brian. Mrs F. V. Piper, Albany street, was hostess at bridge on Friday evening. Miss Peggy Glasson entertained a few young people at her home on Friday evening. There were ten tables in play at the meeting of the bridge circle of the Women’s Club on Monday evening of last week. Prizes were won by Mrs H. R. Robertson (highest score), Mrs G. L. Sadd (concealed number) and Miss W. Gresham (slam prize). Those playing were Mesdames A. A. Mac Gibbon, C. O. Lillie, D. L. Rodger, J. Paterson, Gresham (2). The members of the Anglican Tennis Club held a most enjoyable dance in the Gaiety Hall last Thursday evening. Music was supplied by Bain’s Orchestra and extras were played by Mr W. Chatterton while the duties of M. were carried out by Messrs D. Shields and W. Chatterton. On Wednesday afternoon last, some twenty members of the bridge circle of the Women’s Club journeyed to Invercargill to play the first bridge match of the season with the members of the bridge circle of the Southland Women’s Club. In the absence of the president of the Southland Club, Mrs R. J. Gilmour welcomed the visitors. Afternoon tea was served in the card room, and the tournament took place in the reception room, which was beautifully decorated with bowls of chrysanthemums. The match resulted in a win for Invercargill and prizes were won by Mesdames A. A. MacGibbon and A. H. W. Aitken (highest score) and Mesdames A. B. Caverhill and D. Little (concealed number). Others making the trip were Mesdames W. McAra, F. Wallis Junr., D. M. Cochrane, J. A. Edwards, T. L. Piller, R. W. McCreath, R. Allison, R. Aitken, F. S. Graham, A. T. Pettigrew, H. R. Robertson, J. S. Aitken, L. N. Glasson, A. J. Hawke, R. B. Bannerman, Miss B. Johnson. There was a large attendance of members and friends at the second birthday party of the Gore Women’s Institute, which was held in the Gaiety Hall last Wednesday evening. The president, Mrs E. G. Wilson, presided The birthday cake, which was donated by Mesdames H. E. Bacon and W. McKenzie, was cut by the youngest member of the institute, Miss A. Whittock, and a lengthy toast list was honoured. An amusing one-act play was given by Mesdames J. S. Robbie, C. M. Wilson, W. Turnbull, W. Pierson, G. Mitchell. Several competitions were held which proved most interesting, the winners being Mrs W. McKenzie and Mrs H. E. Bacon. Prizes for the most points in handicraft, gained during the year, were presented to Mrs R. Fisher and Mrs B. Familton. A short address on the aims and objects of the institute was given by Mrs Wilson, who remarked that the Gore branch had grown in membership from nine to sixty in two years. A most enjoyable evening was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” Among those present were:—Mesdames E. G. Wilson, R. Fisher, H. E. Bacon, C. M. Wilson, F. S. Graham, J. W. To commemorate the 21st year of guiding the Gore Girl Guide Association entertained the Brownies on Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday evening the Gore and Mataura Rangers visited the Gore Hospital and entertained the patients with songs, choruses etc., after which the Rangers returned to the Gore Guide Room and were entertained to supper by the Gore Committee. On Friday evening the Gore Girl Guides entertained the honorary members and committee to a social evening, among those present were Mesdames R. W. Hamilton, B. A. Familton, J. Hodge. H. D. Stewart, E. C. Selby, R. W. McCreath, J. W. Turnbull, D. L. Poppelwell, F. S. Graham, L. J. McKenzie, H. R. Robertson, C. Webb, H. Lightbody (Wellington), H. E. Bacon, R. P. Neale, R. Fisher, Misses R. Aitken, E. McDowell, A. Pullar, A. Ross, D. Allen, D. Hamilton, A. Tutty, J. McGill, I. Cullen, H. Bryce. The Rangers, Guides and Brownies all brought gifts to each party which have been handed over to the Gore Clothing Club and Unemployment Committee.

About forty-five guests, being members of the Gore Tramping Club and friends, gathered at the residence of Mr and Mrs J. Hicks, Stratford street, Gore, recently to bid farewell to Mr A. McGregor, who was leaving for Dunedin. The evening passed very pleasantly in games and community singing. At a suitable interval during the proceedings Mr G. Russell, on behalf of fellow-boarders, presented Mr McGregor with a pipe and. tobacco pouch, while for the Tramping Club Mr R. Savidge presented the guest of the evening with a suitcase. Both speakers made references to the good qualities which had made Mr McGregor so well liked by all with whom he came in contact, and wished him evew luck in his new sphere. Messrs T. Davidson and J. Hicks added further eulogies. Mr McGregor in reply expressed thanks for the fine presents he had received and voiced regret at having to leave his many friends in Gore. During the evening Mr C. Miller contributed some pleasing pianoforte solos and Mr B. Ferguson entertained the company with songs.
