STRICKEN VESSEL
the kaponga mishap POSITION SCARCELY ALTERED BAR NOW WORKABLE (Per United Press Association.) Greymquth, May 30. The Kaponga’s position has scarcely altered. The bar is quite workable but meantime will only be worked at daylight. The Karepo and Komata sail to-morrow at 7 a.m., having curtailed their loading draught to 16 feet owing to a sounding at 4 p.m. to-day reveal-, ing a minimum depth at high tide of 19 feet. The preliminary inquiry has been completed by the Collector of Customs, Mr K. Hi Smyth. The report that the Kalingo signalled striking the bar on Friday was denied by Captain Venn, signal master, according to the Harbour Board chairman, Mr McLean, who says there were other witnesses in the signal station to state that the Kalingo did not signal striking the bottom. The bar depth should improve, the tides being two days below zero.
