RUGBY LEAGUE

ENGLISH TEAM AUSTRALIAN TOUR OPENED A COMFORTABLE WIN (United Press Assn.— Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, May 28. The English Rugby League team opened their tour on the Sydney Cricket Ground. They completely outclassed the local players on a wet, muddy ground in the presence of 42,500 spectators, the final scores being England 29, Metropolitan 5. Fourteen penalties were awarded against the Englishmen in the first hall and one against Metropolitan. J. FleeLham, a visiting forward, was sent oft. The Metropolitan team included a mixture of young players and veterans, also three Kangaroos—Maher, McMillan and Brogan. . . For England Sullivan (captain) kicked four goals, Footham and Brogden each scored two tries, and White, Smith and Hudson each scored one try. For Metropolitan O'Connor scored a try and Williams kicked a goal. The Sunday Sun says the Englishmen are a most formidable combination. The majority of the penalties against them were for contraventions of the Australian rules, but not English, upon which a common understanding should be reached. Brogden, one of thev isitors’ wing three-quarters is described as a wonder with tremendous speed. He pierced the defence as if it were made of paper.
