SUNDAY AMUSEMENTS
LEGISLATION IN BRITAIN. SECOND READING OF BILL. (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, May 27. The Government’s Sunday Entertainments Bill received its second reading in the House of Commons to-day by 237 votes to 61. The new Bill, which is a compromise measure, will legalize Sunday concerts and the opening on Sunday of such places as picture galleries and zoos. It permits Sunday cinemas for London and other areas which had Sunday cinemas under special conditions before 1930. The Bill provides that other areas may proceed by a special draft order for permission to open cinemas on Sunday, but the order can only become effective if supported by a majority of the inhabitants in the area concerned. Local authorities are required that the profits to be derived from Sunday opening shall be devoted to charities. A day’s rest for the employees is to be guaranteed.
