MATAURA NEWS

(From Our Correspondent.) In furtherance of the Parliamentary Labour Party’s decision to hold meetings in all xirts of New Zealand at which the case for Labour would be explained, Messrs R. McKeen and J. W. Munro, Member of Parliament for Wellington South and Dunedin North respectively, paid a visit to Mataura on Tuesday evening when they addressed a moderate sized audience in the Regent Theatre, the attendance doubtless being affected by the inclemency of the weather. His Worship the Mayor (Mr C. D. McConnell) occupied the chair, and briefly explained the purpose of the meeting and introduced the speakers. The addresses were on the same lines as have been given at numerous other centres, and at the conclusion a motion calling on the Government to resign was carried. The Mataura branch of the Plunket Society has now completed its annual canvass for funds towards its work and the executive reports a satisfactory response to its anpeal on this occasion. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Mataura Falls Lodge, Manchester Unity, Independent Order of Oddfellows (No. 7616) was held in the Oddfellows Hall on Thursday evening, N.G. Bro. W. Knight presiding over a good attendance of members. The principal business of the evening was the election of officers for the ensuing term, Bro. T. McVicar being elected Noble Grand, with Bro. S. Mac Gibbon as Vice-Grand. The installation and investiture of these officers and their various supporting officers will be conducted next lodge night, P.G. Bro. J. J. Griffiths having accepted the invitation to act as installing master. Although nominations for the vacancy on the Borough Council caused by the resignation of Councillor J. G. Sutherland do not close until Thursday next, Mr John H. Clark, Kana Street, has already definitely announced his intention of standing. Mr Clark was a member of the council for some years, the last year of which he acted as chairman of the works committee. He unsuccessfully contested the mayoralty at the last municipal poll.
