Ben Eastman, of Stanford, is probably America’s greatest Olympic Games prospect in the flat races. This skinny, longlegged blonde kid was a sensation as a sophomore last year. He tied a fifteen-year-old record in the 440yds and revealed equal ability over the 880yds. His second year as a college runner promises to bo full of even more brilliant achievements than 1931. Bud Spencer, former Stanford star, who holds the world’s record of 47sec for the 400 metres, says that Eastman will break either the 400 or 800 metres records. "It all depends on which one he chooses to fire at,” said Bud Spencer the other day. Emerson L. Spencer was Stanford’s greatest quarter-miler until Eastman came along. At the end of his first year in the university, Eastman was as good as Spencer was after three years of competition. Spencer admits he didn’t really learn how to run a quarter-mile. until after the Olympic Games in 1928. He ran in America’s 1600 metre relay team at that gathering.—Sportsman.
