The Club Spirit

Athletic sport has been further .revived during the season just concluded and in this respect much valuable work has been done as the result of the establishment of sports clubs. The team spirit has been fostered and a scheme of systematic training made available to members. The Rugby Park Club, Invercargill, SU ch a stronghold of pro’s, in the past, was very prominent as was also the Pioneer Athletic Club, Gore, which possesses some very promising athletes. The interest that is being taken elsewhere in athletics augurs well for the future of the sport. At Bluff the newlyformed Sports Club is rendering good service and a revival at Riverton is now afoot. "Bystander” has also heard it said that next season will see a fully-fledged professional holiday sports meeting at Gore. Every season some of the “old hands” retire from the game and youngsters, fresh from amateurism, take their place. Professional running demands a higher stand-

ard and consequently the newcomers are apt to be discouraged at their lack of success. “Persevere’’ is the advice proffered to them. Experience, together with training, is a big factor in the cash prize game and next season should see a decided improvement in their performances. There has been a rumour current to the effect that J. H. (Bert) Geddes, the wellknown Rugby’ representative and amateur sprinter, will be seen out in professional company next season.

And now at the conclusion of another season the writer extends to each . and every one of Southland’s sports societies best wishes for the future. May next season be a bumper one for them all!
