POLICE DEFIED

MAN WITH SHOTGUN. COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. (Psr United Press Association.) New Plymouth, March 23. Christian De Rink who met Detective Meiklejohn and Constable Tocker with a gun when the officers went to arrest him at Tikorangi last week, appeared in the police court to-day, charged that w-ith intent to resist arrest he attempted to discharge at the officers a double-barrelled shotgun. De Rink pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court fortrial. Bail was granted in self for £2OO and two sureties of £2OO each. Detective Meiklejohn told how he and the constable visited De Rink’s house with a warrant for his arrest on a false pretences charge. After they had waited some hours, De Rink appeared. He arrived with a shotgun. De Rink shouted to them not to come near or he would shoot. He w-ould not be taken alive. The detective advanced and De Rink bolted. He returned a quarter of an hour later and again menaced the officers with the gun. The constable engaged De Rink in conversation while the detective slowly edged up to him, finallyclosing on him. During the struggle the gun was discharged, but no one was injured. After a fierce struggle De Rink was taken to New Plymouth in a car. A Maori neighbour gave evidence that he lent the gun to De Rink, ostensibly to shoot hares.
