BLUFF NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) On Saturday last the annual harvest festival services were held in the Methodist Church at Bluff, the Rev. Athol. R. Penn being the preacher. The church had been i beautifully decorated for the occasion by the ladies of the congregation and there was also a fine display of produce. At both services sermons appropriate to the season were delivered by Mr Penn, his sub ject for the evening session being “Tne Overflowing Cup.” The anthems “Ye Shall Dwell in the Land” and "0 Prayer the Lord” were sung by the choir, Miss Grace Johnston officiating at the organ. There was a large congregation at each service. Sale of Produce. The Athenaeum was packed on Monday evening for the concert and sale of produce arranged in connection with the harvest festival of the Methodist Church. The Rev. A. R. Penn acted as chairman. The stalls were laden with a tempting array of produce and other useful articles and a brisk trade was done in the time devoted to business. The stall-holders were: Sweets, Mrs A. R. Penn, assisted by Junior Bible Class girls; cakes, Mrs W. Miller and Mrs W. Johnston; jelly, Mrs J. Forde and the Misses Iris and Jean Walker; works, Mrs B. Johnston and Mrs Creagh; produce, Mrs Perkins and Mrs J. Dawson. The entertainment part of the evening met with the entire approval of the audience and every was received with sustained applause. From first to last the items were excellent and extra numbers were demanded in every instance. The accompaniments were in the hands of the Misses G. Johnston and M. McLauchlan. Those contributing items were: Miss Ellis (vocal solos) ; Mrs Robertson (musical monologues) ; Miss L. Hunter (violin solos); Mrs A. R. Penn (recitations) ; Mr Norman Bradshaw (piano solos) ; Misses Jean McKenzie, Morva Oates, and Agnes Sutherland (exhibitions of club-swinging) ; girls of Greenhills Bible Class (humorous item, “The Awkward Squad”). At the conclusion of the entertainment the chairman expressed his pleasure at presiding over such a large and happy audience. He thanked the public for so liberally patronizing the function and all who had worked so heartily to make it the success it had proved to be. A special word of thanks, the speaker said, was due to the members of the Greenhills Bible Class who had travelled down at their own expense and lent valuable assistance with concert items. Presentation. On Monday night a social evening was given by the Bluff M.U.1.0.0.F., when there was a large gathering of - members and friends. Visitors were present from the Loyal Hearts of Oak '(ladies) Lodge, Shamrock Rose and Thistle and Loyal St. Georg! Lodges (Invercargill). Dancing was indulged in till a late hour to music provided by the “Milyon-Airs Dance Orchestra,” Bro. Gordon Giles being the M.C. At the supper interval Bro. S. Harland, on behalf of the local lodge, cordially welcomed the visitors. He then announced that he had a pleasant duty to perform, the presenting of a gift from his fellow-members to Bro. T. Gray, in view of the latter’s approach ing marriage. In handing Bro. Gray an electric iron, Bro. Harland spoke of the fine work done by the recipient on behalf of the oyder, work which had gained him the esteem of all members of the Bluff and visiting lodges. He trusted the young couple would have a very happy and successful future and assured them they would have the best wishes of all Southland brethren. Bro. Gray suitably replied.
