HOLIDAY ATTRACTIONS. CLOSING OF SHOPS AND OFFICES. During Easter there will be the usual wide range of sporting attractions. The list is as follows: — Good Friday. Bowling Tourneys at Otautau and Waikiwi. Golf tournament at Otatara (men). Golf tournament at Queen's Park (ladies). Easter Saturday. Riverton Races. |Z Golf tournaments at Otatara and Queen s Park. Queenstown regatta. Easter Monday. Riverton races. Golf tournaments at Otatara and Queen’s Park. Swimming Sports in tepid baths. Amateur Athletic Sports at Wyndham. Tuesday. Riverton races. In addition to the above fixtures which are being held in Southland, there are a number of tournaments in northern centres in which local players will be participating. At Dunedin rille shots, bowlers and tennis players from Southland will take part in championship tournaments and the Pirates Football Club senior team will play Kaikorai. At Roxburgh Southland will be represented in the tennis tournament and at Oamaru in the bowling tournament. Offices and Banks. The banks will be closed on Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Monday and on Tuesday, March 29. The offices of the legal profession will, be closed from Good Friday until Monday, April 4, on which day they reopen. The mercantile offices will be closed on Good Friday, Easter Saturday. Easter Monday and on Tuesday. The same holidays will be observed by the insurance offices. The dentists will also be closed from Good Friday until Wednesday morning. Shopkeepers’ Position. As doubt will probably arise in the minds of shopkeepers regarding the late night and holidays during the Easter period the following information is supplied by the inspector of factories: — (1) The Late Night: Many shops will be closed on both Good Friday and Easter Saturday. The Shops and Offices Act provides that any shopkeeper who closes his shop and employs no assistants on the usual late closing day may, on giving written notice to the inspector of factories, keep h's shop open anil employ his assistants until 9 p.m. on such other night as he thinks fit. (2) All shops in the following trades are required by the Shop Assistants’ Award to be closed on Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday:—

Boot and shoe, soft goods, fancy goods, leather fancy goods, hardware, crockery, book and stationery and furniture and furnishing trades. Butchers and pork butchers’ shops and all shops in which fresh meat is sold are required to be closed on Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday. Grocers’ shops will observe the same holidays.

Hairdressers’ and tobacconists’ shop’s will be closed all day on Good Friday and Easter Saturday and from twelve noon on Easter Monday. Male and female hairdressers’ assistants are required by the award to be granted full holidays on each of the three days.
