OBITUARY

MRS JANE SUTTON. (Contributed.) By the death of Mrs Jane Sutton, which occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs Archibald McKay, Glencoe, a life of continuous Christian endeavour was brought :o a close, lhe deceased lady had reached the advanced age of 96 years, but nevertheless, enjoyed comparatively good health and was blessed with a wonderfully clear mentality which enabled her- to enjoy life right up to the end. The late Mrs Sutton was born in the County of Wicklow, Ireland, whence, along with her husband and young family, she emigrated to New Zealand 49 years ago, disembarking from the ship I’hilomene at Port Chalmers in the year 1883. The family went almost, immediately to the Otara district where lhe head of the family took an engagement ostensibly for the purpose of gaining colonial experience. Subsequently, for the same purpose, the family removed to the Wyndham district where they remained for a few years, being domiciled on the estate of the late Dr. Menzies. After these experiences a property was purchased in the o‘unsdale district and was successfully farmed until 1913 when the couple retired to live in Mataura. Peace and goodwill was their motto, Mrs Sutton emulating her husband's noble examples of character by her unceasing efforts to help and guide and implant in the hearts of all young people with whom she came, into contact a knowledge of, and reverence for the Saviour she loved so well, and followed so closely; and to this end one of her first acts on arrival at. Otara was the establishment of a Sabbath School, an institution which remains to this day. Shortly after arrival at Dunsdale she brought about a revival of the Sabbath School instruction in that locality which was much appreciated in those early days when church services and pastoral visits were few and far between. She will be remembered for her beautiful Christian examples and untiring efforts to do good.

Of her family, Mrs A. McKay and Mr George Sutton still reside nt Glencoe and Mr Joseph Sutton at Winton. The third son, Mr William Sutton, made the supreme sacrifice during the Great War.
