DEER STALKING

EASTER ACTIVITIES. PROSPECTS BRIGHT. In spite of prevailing conditions there will be a large number of deer stalkers out during Easter. Three parties will also be engaged in a quest for wapiti. It is not easy to forecast what the season will bring in the way of heads, but if the present weather continues the stalkers should have excellent sport and should return with worthy trophies. New country will be opened up in the Eglinton Valley, though this has not yet been blocked, and in the Five Rivers district, in the Takitimos and in the Dart Valley stalkers will also be out. Two tramping parties returned recently from overland trips in the moose country beyond the head of Lake Hauroko. One party sighted a full-grown bull moose carrying a line head and had it under observation for about 30 seconds at a distance of 50 yards. This was in a shingle creek in the Seaforth Valley, in which it seems that the main herd is still located. Unfortunately although two prospecting licenses for moose were taken up, the stalkers concerned now find that they are unable to make the trip. The North Island is well represented on the list of wapiti license-holders. Some fine heads should be obtained as the herd is thriving. The license-holders and their blocks are as follows: Red Deer: Block 2 (Monowai). —W. D. Robson, B. Smith and M. Henderson (Invercargill) and A. Dickson (Tuatapere). Block 3 (Hope Arm). —H. Brown and party (Balfour). Block 4 (South Arm, Manapouri)—E. Christie and P. Richmond (Mossburn). Block 5 (Head of Grebe) — G. Sim and party (Pukemaori). Block 6 (Head of Borland) —W. Cavanagh and Carr Bros. (Pukemaori). Block 7 (Borland)—A. Wilson (Bluff), S. Wall, F. Acker, J. Archer (Invercargill). Block 8 (Titiroa) —J. Town and W. Bailey (Heddon Bush). Block'lo (Head of Monowai) —P. Hamilton (Tuatapere). Block 11 (Electric River) —L. and E. Guthrie (Tuatapere), G. Scandrett (Invercargill). Block 12 (Mt Burns) —lan Talbot and party (Ohai). Block 14 (Lake Monowai) —G. McEwan and party (Invercargill). Block 16 (Mt White) —H. Robins and J. Gorton (Tuatapere). Block 24 (Walker’s Block) —W. Mabson and party (Invercargill). Dart Valley—A.
