AFFRAY IN STREET
CONSTABLE ASSAULTED ARREST EFFECTED LABOURER SENT TO GAOL (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, March 21. A sensational affair which occurred in Wellesley street early on Saturday morning when a young man, with the help of a companion, broke away from a constable who had arrested him, had a sequel in the Police Court. John Edward Siddens, aged 21 years, a labourer, was charged with being disorderly while drunk, with using obscene language, with resisting a constable in the execution of his duty and with assaulting the constable. Siddens was convicted on all four charges and sentenced to three months imprisonment on the count relating to assault. Constable Allen said that shortly before 1 a.m. on Saturday he was on duty. He noticed the disorderly behaviour of two young men who were pushing each other and using obscene language. Siddens was under the influence of liquor and witness arrested him.
As Siddens was being taken to the police station, he endeavoured to escape, said witness. The constable was about to handcuff him when accused’s companion returned. The two men put the boot into the constable and Siddens broke away. The constable gave chase and again caught Siddens, but again the other man came to the rescue and both got away. Later Siddens was arrested.
