The trip was made in beautiful weather, landings being effected in every case and no time was lost from start to finish of the voyage. Early yesterday morning, the Tamatea sailed for Ruapuke Island and returned to Bluff at 1.30 p.m. The Canadian Conqueror is expected to arrive from Dunedin to-day. She loads wool and general cargo and sails on completion for Melbourne. The Federal Line steamer Kent, which is completing Homeward loading at Auckland, is scheduled to leave the northern port today for London, via Cape Hq~jq, Dakar and Montevideo. The Port Hunter, was due at Wellington to-day, from 'Wanganui, and will sail on Friday, earlier than was previously expected, for Halifax and London, via Panama. The lonic, en route from Southampton, left Balboa on March 15 for Auckland, where she is due on April 5. Messrs Dalgety and Co. advise that the auxiliary schooner Huia is due at Port Chalmers about March 24 from Auckland. After discharging explosives she will come to Dunedin to load general cargo, and will sail about the end of this week for Lyttelton and Auckland.

The Union Company’s steamer Kartigi arrived in the Lower Harbour, Dunedin, on Friday morning from Newcastle, and after undergoing medical inspection, came to Dunedin to discharge a quantity of coal. The vessel encountered strong southerly weather during the last two days of the voyage, and her arrival was delayed by several hours. The Kartigi sailed on Friday night for Oamaru, Timaru and Lyttelton to complete discharge. The quarterly statistics of idle tonnage published by the Chamber of .Shipping at the end of January reveal a slightly more encouraging state of affairs than has been apparent for the past six months. The total of laid-up stripping in Britain on January 1 this year was 728 vessels of 1,966,417 tons net, compared with 778 of 2:089A43 tons on October 1, 1931, a decline of over 123,C00 tons, or 5.9 per cent. The figures are also lower than those for July 1 last year (752 of 2,044,092 tons), but they are still higher than those recorded on April 1 (778 of 1,919,786 tons) and January 1, 1931 (665 of 1,593,247 tons). The January figures include 10 foreign vessels of 20,340 tons, and 60 British tankers of 232,603 tons, 17 of the latter, aggregating 70,/69 tons, being motor
