LIQUOR IN AMERICA
LIGHT BEER RECOMMENDED. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) Washington, March 19. A political sensation was caused by the Senate Sub Committee recommending legislation for 4 per cent beer, advancing six reasons: It would promote temperance and decrease crime, it would not be intoxicating, the manufacture of beer would give employment to probably a million persons, a hundred thousand farmers would derive profit for growing between 60,900,000 and 120,000,000 bushels of the necessary barley, the tax yield from beer would be from 347,000,000 to 800,000,000 dollars, and hotels and restaurants would recapture business now diverted to sly grog shops. The recommendations are in the form of a report containing expert testimony to be laid before the Senate.
