CHAMPION SINGLES. A. J. CAMPBELL WINS FINAL. A CLOSE CONTEST. Bowling of a very high standard was witnessed in the final of the champion of champion singles which was played on the Southland green on Saturday evening and resulted in A. J. Campbell (Southland) prevailing over J. McKendry (Woodlands) by one point. The game, which extended over an hour and a half, was played under ideal weather conditions and was followed with the keenest of interest by a large gathering of spectators. The green was in perfect older and a splendid exhibition of drawing was given by both players. The contest was a close one and the game ended 20-19 in Campbell’s favour. McKendry secured three in the first head an? in the second one: In the third head when the Woodlands man was lying four Campbell drove with his last bowl and burnt it. In the next head McKendry was lying three and Campbell failed with a draw-. Campbell drew three shots in the fourth head and in the fifth followed up with three beauties. McKendry' with his second last bowl drove and with his last had a full draw, trailing the kitty, but Campbell still held one. The sixth saw Campbell put up a very short head, but McKendry drew two on the kitty. Campbell drove to take one out and McKendry drew another. In the seventh, when McKendry was lying one, Campbell drove with his last bowl to take the kitty through and lie two. The Southland man drew two in the eighth head and McKendry with his last bowl drew second shot. In the ninth, when Campbell lay two, McKendry drew the kitty away and lay one which was not improved upon. The tenth head saw Campbell draw two shots. McKendry' played a good shot which, however, just missed. The eleventh was a very good head, the players lying alternately. McKendry drew the jack with his last bowl and trailed it for two, thus making the game 12-9 in his favour. McKendry in the twelfth drew three near the jack, _but Campbell drove with his Jast bowl to take one out. In the thirteenth head McKendry scored with a beauty. Campbell played one just as good, took the kitty and lay two. McKendry drove and touched his own, leaving Campbell with three. Campbell with his last bowl drew another and secured four —the first of the game. The fourteenth head was the best for drawing. Campbell lay three and McKendry drove, leaving the Southland man one up, thus making the game level —14 all. In the fifteenth when Campbell was lyihg two, McKendry came with a run and lay two. Campbell drew right on the jack with his last bowl and McKendry missed. Campbell secured one which put him ahead for the first time during the game. In the sixteenth McKendry played good bowls and finished up with three which put him ahead of Campbell again. The seventeenth head, however, saw Campbell draw three shots which put him one up again. In the eighteenth Campbell increased his lead by one. In a measure in the nineteenth head Campbell secured the shot, this making him three up with two heads to go. Both bowlers in the twentieth seemed to lose the green for the first time during the match. McKendry notched one. In the twenty-first head McKendry' drew a beautiful bowl eight inches in front of the jack. Campbell w r as short with his first. McKendry drew second shot and Campbell was narrow with his next. McKendry was also narrow with his and Campbell drew second shot past the jack. McKendry failed with his last bowl and left Campbell winner of the game by one point. Both players were warmly congratulated on the keenness of the contest. In presenting to the winner the cup miniature and medal, Mr A. Peterson, president of the Southland Bowling Centre, said that this was a case where individual play had won the gams. The final had been one of the finest witnessed on the green for some considerable time, being very strenuously, contested. It was a great credit to the Southland Club to possess a player of such consistency as Mr Campbell. Referring to the .Mr Peterson said that Mr McKendry had looked like a winner, being beaten by the splendid play of his opponent in drawing the saving shot. The speaker also paid a tribute to the work of the superintendent (Mr J. C. Thomson).

A GRADE CHAMPIONSHIP.

NORTHEND CLUB WINS. The final between Northend and Invercargill for premier honours was played on Saturday on the Te Rangi green and resulted as follows: — N. I. McKitterick Meredith, Reid, S. Keen interest is being taken in the rinks tournament at Otautau on Good Friday, and already the required number have entered.
