THE BOAT RACE

CAMBRIDGE AGAIN NINTH SUCCESSIVE ) VICTORY OXFORD CREW EXHAUSTED (United Pre-)S Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) London, March 19. The annual boat race between Oxford and Cambridge Universities was rowed today, Cambridge winning almost paddling in by five lengths. The Oxford crew were exhausted. Time, 19min llsec. Finishing 18 seconds ahead, Cambridge equalled Oxford’s record of nine successive wins. Sunshine brought thousands to the Thames and many had breakfast on the towpaths. Oxford’s only chance of an equal contest vanished when they lost the toss. Cambridge selected the Surrey station, obtaining an advantage. Rowing with wonderful rhythm, they lost the struggling Oxonians before they passed Hammersmitl}, and without effort increased their lead at every stroke. Oxford spurted valiantly, but hopelessly, at Chiswick and finished exhausted. The Cambridge crew sat smiling and erect in their boat. This year’s race was rowed over a course about 400 yards shorter than usual owing to structural alterations on the bridge which cause violent currents at the usual starting point. The authorities agreed that the race should begin at a point opposite the London Boating Club and that the finish be at the usual post at Mortlake.
