The Tamatea was expected to return from the mutton-bird islands last night or this morning. Local conditions suggest that her trip would be a pleasant one for those making the passage; but this does not always hold good, as it is frequently found that there is a marked difference between the sea conditions of the mainland and the islands. After completing her New Zealand loading the Scales Line steamer Ardenvohr sailed for Home shortly before midnight on Friday. The Union Company’s freighter Kaimai sailed for Dunedin on Saturday morning after discharging coal and loading wool for transhipment. The Union Company’s intercolonial steamer Wainui is expected to arrive from Melbourne this morning with Australian mails and cargo. She sails again this evening for her usual northern ports via Dunedin. The Government motor ship Maui Pomare is due at Lyttelton this morning from Apia and Niue Island with a fruit cargo. She is due at Wellington to-morrow, and Will proceed to Auckland to complete discharge. Cable advice has been received that the C. and D. Line motor ship Port Fremantle reached London on March 13 from New

Zealand. She left Wellington on February 0 for London, via Cape Horn and Dakar. Cable advice received states that the Canadian Cruiser, en route from Halifax to Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton,’Timaru, Dunedin, and Australia, cleared Balboa on March 9. She is due at Auckland on April 6.

The Middlesex, en route from Antwerp, has reported by wireless that she expects to arrive at Auckland bn the afternoon of March 23. With cargo from Pacific coast porta the Union Company’s motor ship Hauraki was scheduled. to clear ( Los Angeles on Thursday; fop ..Ajickland, Wellington, New Plymouth, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. She is due at Auckland about April 8. The Federal Line steamer Cornwall left Auckland on Tuesday evening for Napier, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Port Chalmers, in continuation of her voyage from Liverpool. After completion of discharge the vessel will load for her Homeward voyage at Port Chalmers, New Plymouth and Wellington. She is to sail finally from Wellington for London and west coast ports of Great Britain, via Montevideo and Dakar, on April 16. ’ Built at Rotterdam in 1929, the tanker Sagona completed pumping and left Lyttelton on Tuesday for San Pedro, _ California. The vessel made her trial trip on November 16, 1929, and her maiden voyage, was to San Pedro. She is owned by the joint stock company, Christiansen, of Norway, a company which owns two other vessels—the Evina and Edna—both of which are tankers. The Sagona’s master, Captain E. Leire, of Norway, is a well-experienced sailor, and has seen a number of years, in sailing ships. In 1898 he was in the Ollivier, a Norwegian barque, which loaded coal at Newcastle —an operation which the crew had to perform. The vessel, lifted 2000 tons and the loading took the crew of 18 meh'six weeks. The vessel was in Chinese ports too early to enable the master to form any idea of the military trouble that was brewing, but the Sagona was in the Yangtse Kiang River during the big flood and when bodies were floating past the ship downstream. This was her first visit to New Zealand. TONGARIRO AT BLUFF. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Tongariro, which reached Bluff on Friday, left Falmouth on February 6 for New Zealand via Panama, and arrived at Tokomaru Bay on March 12 after an ex- ■ cellent passage.
