The official opening of the Mataura Golf Club for the season took place on Wednesday afternoon when there was a good attendance of members and visitors from various clubs. The greens and fairways were in excellent order for the opening and the executive was the recipient of many congratulations on its work in this respect. In th ( e absence of the president, Mr J. Haigh, the opening ceremony was performed' by Mr A. Gourlay, who expressed pleasure at the attendance and extended a welcome to the visitors. He trusted one and all would have a successful season’s play. On behalf of the visitors Mr A. N. Mac Gibbon (Mokoia Club) briefly replied. Play for the afternoon took the form of Canadian foursome,, which unfortunately had to be held up on account of rain commencing, but were completed later. The winners, Mrs Weatherburn and J. Brewster, were handed the trophies presented by the club’s patron, Mr Charles E. Rowe. The inaugural shoot of the Mataura Miniature Rifle Club was held in Mr C. D. McConnells wool store on Wednesday evening when there was a small muster of members owing to the very inclement weather. The usual sweepstake was held, the winner being T. Gaudion, jnr., who returned a card of 70 out of a possible 80. R. C. Barclay and Ewan Ramage were equal with 65. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Mataura Falls Lodge, Manchester Unity, Independent Order of Oddfellows, No. 7616, was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Thursday evening, N.G. Bro. W. Knight presiding over a splendid attendance of members. The representatives to the annual conference at Invercargill last week, P.G.’s Bro. J. Wilson and G. Cameron and N.G. Bro. Knight, gave a comprehensive report of the proceedings and were heartily thanked for their services. In recognition of P.G. Bro. T. H. Butler’s services he was presented with his ' usual emblem of merit and returned thanks. The juvenile branch under N.G. Bro. R. Clarke met prior to the adult. meeting and were engaged principally with th‘e initiation of a candidate. Incidentally it is worthy of note that these youthful Oddfellows show considerable enthusiasm in their work, and under the guidance of P.G. Bro. R. W. Coltherd ’ conduct their lodge affairs in a highly creditable manner. Dr R. A. Shore, of Wellington, a former resident of Mataura, was a visitor during the week. Miss E.
